The Apostle, Paul, asks a probing question in Galatians. One relevant to our day and age that requires serious consideration and an honest answer. “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). It is a simple and relatively straightforward question; however, finding the balance between pleasing man and God can be challenging.

Today we live in a world where there is an ever-increasing abundance of people, places, and things to be upset over. This world offers an endless supply of ideas, worldviews, and opinions, which can lead to alienation, tribalism, and just plain ugliness between people and their expressed beliefs. With an increased capacity to communicate quickly and often without regard to caution and wisdom, we can intentionally or unintentionally set off a firestorm of emotions with a tweet, a post, or a seemingly harmless conversation gone wrong over coffee.

Recently, my family celebrated the wedding of my nephew. My mind played back a host of memories from his childhood, and I found myself recalling the times I spent with him as a young man. 1 Corinthians 13 was read as a part of the ceremony, and as I listened, one verse captivated me. “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13, ESV). My thoughts journeyed toward the word hope. Hope is fragile and a needed virtue during troubling times.
