Recently, my family celebrated the wedding of my nephew. My mind played back a host of memories from his childhood, and I found myself recalling the times I spent with him as a young man. 1 Corinthians 13 was read as a part of the ceremony, and as I listened, one verse captivated me. “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13, ESV). My thoughts journeyed toward the word hope. Hope is fragile and a needed virtue during troubling times.

I use words all the time. My calling and my vocation demand the use of words. I write, speak, and persuade, I offer encouragement, exhortation, challenge, and hopefully comfort with…words. I have never lacked for words, and often I am more careless with my words than I will ever realize. However, finding the words to talk about the tragic death of George Floyd and the hurt and pain my black brothers and sisters are experiencing have escaped me. Maybe it’s because I haven’t fully processed the events of the past two weeks. Maybe it’s because I have never had to deal with the topic of racism, justice, hurt, pain, and a host of other adjectives and emotions our nation is experiencing at the level I am experiencing now. I still don’t seem to have the words needed, and I don’t know what to say, but I want to begin to find those words.

Every man is driven by something or someone. Defining marks that challenge and establish who he is and who he desires to become. I have pastored or served on a church staff for 25 years now, and God has used different experiences and people to shape the man I am and the man I am becoming. The American author Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why.” Knowing what you are doing and why you are doing it has proven to bring clarity and passion in my life. The purpose of this blog is to provide an avenue to explore three areas that have brought an incredible amount of joy and passion in my life.
